The Tuesday after her birthday, she began to have a slight chest cold with a cough and runny nose. No big deal we were thinking. Surely she will be better by her get-together on Saturday to celebrate her birthday and child dedication! Well, on Wednesday, she began running a fever, so we took her to the doctor on Thursday, and she was diagnosed with a raging ear infection that probably began with a virus. They gave her an antibiotic injection and an oral antibiotic to clear up the ear infection and told us she should be feeling better and ready for the get-together on Saturday. Things got a little better on Friday and Saturday, but she continued to not be her sassy, energetic, and busy self. She was drinking fair amounts of fluid, but not eating very much at this point. She also began throwing up her antibiotic after gagging from the taste. Man, that stuff is nasty!
We continued with her birthday gathering/child dedication on Saturday afternoon. She perked up a little bit that afternoon, but continued to just act like she did not feel well. I had bought her a beautiful white smocked dress for her dedication that afternoon. Well, the antibiotic decided that it was going to disrupt her GI tract about 20 minutes after putting it on. Needless to say, she was unable to wear that dress after that incident. So, she was dedicated in her birthday shirt with her name and the number "2" and a pair of jeans. Oh well, you do what you have to do, right? I think I will officially declare that our family is a magnet for diarrhea in gatherings of people! It was a beautiful dedication! Thank you Pat Herron for doing such an incredible job!
Everyone had a wonderful time, and after all the company left, we settled down for bed. We were worried about Karlye because she just continued not to feel well. We were worried about her lack of fluids and GI issues at this point. Nothing was encouraging enough to make her drink.
Well, Sunday morning she quickly went downhill. She was pale, had zero energy, and began to have labored breathing. We knew something was definitely not right at this point. We went through all the hoops to take her to the clinic that is open on Sunday, however they instructed us to go to the ER, as they thought she needed more than they could offer. So, off to the ER we went. After 6 hours in the ER we were admitted to the hospital for 2 nights for iv fluids and iv antibiotics. It wasn't until Tuesday that she really began to feel a little better. They concluded that she was dehydrated and had an upper respiratory infection that was just not getting better at home. They discharged her on Tuesday around lunch.
We are so thankful for Children's Hospital and the doctor's who helped Karlye. Thank you Lord for healing our daughter. A big thank you to Papa Steve for keeping our tummy's full while at the hospital and a big thank you to Nana for staying at our house, keeping Ryan, and helping with some houshold chores!
So, there you have it! One memorable 2nd Birthday!
